One of the most common questions we get from owner-operators considering joining ZR81 is: should I run dry van or flatbed? The honest answer depends on several factors specific to your situation.
Dry Van: Consistency and Volume
Dry van remains the backbone of American freight. The load boards are deep, the lanes are predictable, and most shippers don't require specialized equipment or skills. For a new owner-operator or someone building a stable book of business, dry van is the lower-risk choice.
The downside: rates have compressed over the past two years as capacity entered the market. You need a carrier with strong shipper relationships — not just load board freight — to maintain revenue.
Flatbed: Higher Rates, More Complexity
Flatbed freight typically pays $0.20–$0.40 per mile more than dry van on comparable lanes. But it requires tarping, securing, and physical work that dry van doesn't. It also demands more experience and specific equipment.
If you have the experience and the right trailer, flatbed can significantly increase your annual revenue. The key is consistent freight — spot market flatbed is volatile.
What ZR81 Offers
We run both dry van and flatbed under our authority. Owner-operators can choose their equipment type and we'll match them with appropriate freight. We don't force anyone into freight they're not comfortable with.
